Yeah, we’re winding slowly towards the end of the year, I figured I’d throw out a nice little list of the SA songs that really got me and my mates jammin during 2006. 2006 has really been a huge year for SA rock – the revival is on and people are starting to pay attention once more.
So here’s my list, ordered from bottom to top:
- 10. Evolver – Let’s Get Naked – Buy Album
- 9. The Dirty Skirts – Feeling the Pressure
- 8. Scarlet Box – Everybody’s God
- 7. Cassette – Love with the light on – Buy Album
- 6. Chris Chameleon – Blue – Buy Album
- 5. Love Jones – Kicks – Buy Album
- 4. Fokofpolisiekar – Hemel op die Platteland – Buy Album
- 3. The Hellphones – Shake It – Buy Album
- 2. The Parlotones – Rock Paper Scissors – Buy Album
- 1. The Hellphones – Amsterdam Bang – Buy Album
Both Wickhead and 16Stitch receive honourable mentions, but I still need to get more familiar with their newer stuff.
You may notice that The Hellphones appear twice. They deserve it. Besides, I stick with my East Rand roots.
Agree? Disagree? Think there’s something that I misssed? Shout it out in the comments.

Nice list Shaun. I’m listening to some Hellphones tracks and they’re pretty cool, a The Strokes sound to them which I’m not sure is intentional or a product of their[…] – I just checked their MySpace page and The Strokes are listed as an influence, so there it is. 😉
I was going to say “raw recording”.
