Laugh It Off Wins Constitutional Court Appeal

Congratulations must go to Justin Nurse and Laugh It Off Promotions. They stared into the face of the brute goliath SAB and dared to pull a tongue at them. The constitutional court has ruled in defense of that “tongue-pulling”. So get your browser down to laughitoff.co.za at or around the 3rd June 2005 if you want to get your hands on one of the 1000 “Black Labour, White Guilt” T-shirts they created.

More details on this story can be found here and here.

It is fantastic news to hear that our Constitutional Court still has their heads screwed on correctly, and understands the right to free speech as one of the most valued in our democracy.

Nokia is not evil

Great news for the Open Source/Free Software community is that Nokia is basically giving patent indemnity to any potential patent infringements that the Linux kernel developers may have committed.

I always had a good feeling about Nokia, and this just adds to the warm fuzziness. Now they really need to focus on building better phones, especially a Linux based phone…

Culturally Liberated Expression

What a phenomenal story! A uniquely talented artist going by the name “Banksy” walked into the four largest museums in New York City and proceeded to exhibit his own works – simply a case of sticking them on the wall, really. Fantastic. Apparently two of the works have been removed, but the other two remain on display.

I strongly believe South African artists should consider this option – the levels of security should be far lower here than in the top New York galleries.

The photos are here. They are a must see.

Banksy’s work – at least the part I have browsed on his website – is eye-opening, thought provoking, and visually stimulating to say the least. It is a brilliant form of social commentary – I especially enjoy the graffiti pieces. Take a look and enjoy.

Laugh It Off not giving up yet..

Laugh It Off productions, the small company that inspired a nation of parody T-shirts has not given up in their battle against the SABMiller brewing giant. Today they argued an appeal in front of the Constitional Court for the freedom to express their parody slogans. Good for them, hopefully the constituional court will think a little deeper this time. More Open Source Advocacy

Interesting! As a follow up to my discussion on Open Source with Brad, this morning I saw a great article at linuxdevcenter. Yes, Peruvians into Open Source(Dr. Edgar David Villanueva Nunez) rock! Why? Read this. Brilliant.
