Metallica – The Band That Would Not Leave

Metallica - James Hetfield
Saturday’s concert was awesome, despite the problems detailed in my last post. As a matter of fact, I’d have to write an essay just to do each act justice.

All the supporting acts performed really good sets – sticking to the hits and keeping the crowd alive. The only band that seemed to be a bit flat was The Rasmus, but I’ve had plenty of exposure to Finns, and relatively speaking they were positively jovial!!!

Simple Plan
were great openers, Seether rocked with all their classics and some new material too, Collective Soul had a great (gremlin-filled) performance and Metallica just blew everyone away, over and over again. James Hetfield has a stage presence second to none. They owned that stadium. By the end of their two hour long performance they looked just as tired as we did (probably far more) and yet they did not want to leave the stage. Our enthusiasm gave big man James gooseflesh! Lars practically died of exhaustion on stage too!

Was it worth the R500? Hell yeah.

After about 15 minutes of us cheering them and them cheering us, eventually they left the stage with a promise to return soon.

Oh, you want photos? Check here…

Google Sightseeing, South African style

As pointed out by Cherryflava and Marc Forrest from Satellite ZA, Google Maps is now starting to cover areas of South Africa.

The two sites above have a multitude of interesting locations covered in Google Sightseeing style. Commentary.co.za also has a bunch of good spots to check out.

So now I’m joining the hunt for some more interesting satellite sightseeing locations in .ZA:

Alphen Park, Benoni, South Africa (the suburb where I live).

Lakeside MallThe Lakeside Mall, Benoni, South Africa

East Rand MallThe East Rand Mall, Boksburg, South Africa

Cherryflava thinks Musica sucks. But how bad?

Just to add to our woes as described on Cherryflava’s site, Cherry managed to miss the fact that the Musica download site, on top of being hugely incompatible with the target market for music downloads, is also hosted in the United Kingdom – fat lot of good that does for us international-bandwidth restricted suckers in South Africa.

Why no daylight savings in ZA?

According to about.com the US has significant enrgy savings through their implementation of daylight savings. I never thought of daylight savings as an energy saver, but it must be true. Here’s the excerpt:

How Does Daylight Savings Time Save Energy?
Theory has it that daylight savings time promotes energy conservation. According to the California Energy Commission, energy use and the demand for electricity for lighting homes is directly connected to bedtime. When people go to bed, they turn of lights, TVs and other appliances, which account for about 25 percent of America’s daily total use of electricity.

Studies done in the 1970s by the U.S. Department of Transportation show that America’s electricity usage is reduced by about one percent during each day that daylight savings time is in effect.

I’m definitely not the biggest fan of early rising, and daylight saving would throw me off for at least a week, but surely energy saving is a good enough reason to have daylight saving in South Africa?
