Bluebean Sucks

Bluebean is so emo!

Continuing with my series on sucky service, here’s a sweet little story at the expense of those thieving money-lenders at Bluebean / Barclaycard / Standard Bank.

My Bluebean card was my second ever credit card. (The first, 20twenty, still brings a fond memory and a tear to my eye) I’ve used it well, treated it kind, and in turn it has looked after me over the years. The garage card, which came as part of the deal, is just pure bliss. At the end of this month I will be closing my Bluebean account. All my future credit dealings will be through Virgin Money. Here’s why:

Upon opening my June credit card statement yesterday (yes, I’m a wee bit slow when it comes to snail mail), I noticed the unusually high debit interest rate of 22.5%. I was dead sure that all my previous statements had said 19%. In fact I was absolutely certain because two weeks ago I attempted to get Bluebean to match the better Virgin Money Credit Card interest rate of 17%. Yeah sure, a couple of percentage points it may be, but it all adds up, doesn’t it?

Upon calling the call centre I was informed that the interest rate was raised to this amount following the introduction of the new National Credit Act. What the Fu–? No seriously, I’ve perused the details of the act, and nowhere does it say that money lenders must now increase their interest rates. Blimey. I told them I wanted to renegotiate my rate and they flat out told me they do not negotiate.

So that’s that. I said “Fuck You Clowns” (well not quite as nicely), and asked them to close the account. In the blink of an eye they lost a 7-year-loyal customer. It then took me all of five minutes to apply for the addition of a Garage Card to my Virgin Money account. Virgin now gives me 18% without any bullshit or levels or grades. They’re taking an extra percent, probably in line with rate changes, to survive, but they’re not trying to rip their consumers a new one!

To add insult to injury, the Bluebean website still states an even more incorrect interest rate.

BlueBean incorrect interest rate

I’m in the process of fighting them to backdate all charges (for all customers, not just me!) all the way back to the lower rate until such time as they correct the website. It may not work, but the fight sure is fun!

Put simply, Bluebean sucks.

Tuli Wilderness Trails. Wow!

Black Eagle Closeup

What an enjoyable and incredible weekend I have just spent at Tuli Wilderness Trails in Botswana! From border entrance to border exit the trip was truly amazing.

We stayed at the Mohave Bush Camp, an isolated campsite inside the Northern Tuli game reserve. Despite the isolation and raw beauty, we were treated like kings – The fully equipped kitchen and bar with all the crockery and utensils you could think of. The magical disappearing dirty dishes. The raked sand(!!) inside the camp area. The outdoor hot shower. Full toilet facilities in the open air. Hot water for coffee before you even wake up in the morning. A dedicated guide. Game drives. Nature walks. Sundowners on a hillside. Fantastic! And the price was right too! Not expensive at all.

I highly recommend taking a trip there – the self-catering camp sleeps twelve, its just 30km past the Platjan border into Botswana and easily able to be reached with a normal car.

The photos are here.

Motor Finance Corporation (MFC) Sucks

If you’re looking for MFC’s Contact Details, click here. (And good luck!!)

Citroen C4

So here’s a letter which I sent on Friday to all the email addresses I could find at MFC (motor finance corporation) following their ghastly service.
Email addresses included:
epienaar@mfc.co.za (address no longer exists),
Jaco Kruger – jkruger@mfc.co.za (read at 2007/06/25 08:19:34 AM )(he got a fax too!!!), Linda Thompson – lthompson@mfc.co.za (who read at 2007/06/25 09:20:44 AM and responded by palming me off to Louis Masilo, who hasn’t responded),
care@mfc.co.za (hehe, now that’s a joke),
Steven Khoza – SKhoza@mfc.co.za (read at 06/25/2007 08:21:52 AM),
Pat Singh – PSingh@mfc.co.za (read at 2007/06/26 10:04:42 AM),
and PDuBruyn@mfc.co.za (address no longer exists).

Oh well, at least now its on the internet for all to see… I have to be off – in search of a new finance house for my vehicle.

Dear Sir,

On Wednesday of this week I supplied the necessary detail as part of a request for a border letter to take my vehicle, Citroen C4 SKC002GP, into Botswana this weekend. This was well within the requirements stated of submitting the request 48 hours prior to departure. Having received no response I contacted the call centre today (Friday) as I am due for imminent departure, as was clearly stated on my request.

I was assured this morning that everything was fine and that I would receive the letter via fax early this afternoon. I proceeded to phone again at least 5 times at around 2pm, 3pm and 4pm to ensure that I would still receive it. Each time I was greeted by helpful call centre assistants, each time giving out my ID number and each time I was assured the letter was on its way. At one stage I even had two call-centre assistants on the line simultaneously. I also spoke to Mr Jaco Kruger a number of times who also assured me the letter was forthcoming. Upon calling at 4:40pm the call centre was closed and I received an abrupt message detailing MFCs office hours.

I am now in a position where I am unable to take my vehicle across the border to my destination. It is also Friday evening which leaves little option for making other arrangements. Any arrangement I do make is going to become an extra expense which I will then have to bear. As you should understand, I am rather irate. Fuming, in fact. I’m also highly distressed and am questioning my choice of MFC as a finance house. This
is also reflecting very poorly on potential future dealings with the Imperial Bank group as well as Nedbank Group.

Needless to say I will be investigating a transfer of my business to another financial institution upon my return to work on Tuesday.

Thank you for your time. I now need to go make other arrangements for my early morning departure tomorrow. On the off chance that you receive this mail on Friday evening, a prompt reaction to rectify this state would be most welcome.

Should you wish to discuss this incident, please feel free to contact me.

Regards,
Shaun Dewberry
