Wednesday Time Wasters

It’s the first 5-day working week in South Africa the People’s Republic of Jacob Zuma for a long time, so to help split up the week, here are a handful of time wasters I’ve been collecting over the past weeks:
- View some of cinema’s most dramatic typing scenes.
- Download the MP3 and listen to Bat For Lashes’ cover of Kings of Leon – Use Somebody. [via]
- Play Kings Quest / Police Quest / Space Quest or Leisure Suit Larry online at Sarien.net. Very cool.
- Create hailstorms that destroy buildings, planes and more in the super-addictive online game, Effing Hail. [via]
- Check out some of South Africa’s best and worst ads.
- Read 1001 rules for my unborn son. Hugely inspirational and very insightful. I can’t get enough of it. Some of my favourites:
“14. Men with facial hair have something to hide.”
“344. When building a fire, choose deadwood from a tree, not off the ground.”
“354. Experience the serenity of traveling alone.”
“59. Socks are not necessary in the summer, no matter how formal the occasion.”
No streaming in South Africa.
DRM crippled songs do not play on iPods. Er, hello? Are you hearing this? Are you complete and utter morons?
The “Store-front” is not compatible with alternative operating systems and browsers.
You’re almost as bad as than Pick ‘n Play.
You online music stores never learn.
And there’s always the Analog Hole, which cannot be plugged.
Nokia Music Store, congratulations, you too have blown your chance to open up online music in South Africa.

Now, Nokia execs (that includes you, Mr Jake Larsen), go read this study. Here’s the gist of it:
“online music bootleggers are much more likely to pay for music online than those who don’t steal music.”
It’s simple: Give us a reasonable record store that gives us the music in a format that works for us, and you’ll make your money. And yes, FUCK the record labels. The record companies don’t know shit about the modern music business.

Fragments of Oppikoppi

This post is probably the worst Oppikoppi review ever written – it’s merely a collection of fragments from the weekend, as recovered from my phone, and vague memories.
- The plastics: Tight. Good. No persona or identity. Too ho-hum. Too much Kooks. Why why why? Like watching the Kooks without any of the good songs.
- Rambling bones: I’d rather watch paint dry.
- New Academics needed their bassist. Jesus tap-dancing christ what a disappointment.
- Ashtray Electric seemed lost. Need a focus and idea. Concept.
- aKING step up. In style. Quirky at the start but its difficult to tell if that was a mistake or just part of their style. Thank god for aKING.
- The Beams. One of those bands you watch but never tell your friends you saw. Ever. Cos you were smoking blunt. In the shithouse.
- The Arrows. Good. Especially like the lower vocals and the very fucking cool kick-ass attitude.
Needless to say, my phone’s battery didn’t get much further, and at this stage I instead went in search of more interesting activities at the top bar. On the whole this was probably one of the poorer line-ups I’ve seen at koppi, but that still didn’t take anything away from the party.
