Coke Fest SA Band Lineup

Apparently they have finalised the line-up of South African acts for the 2008 schnarf-Fest. Forgive my lack of fucken enthusiasm here:

WONDERBOOM, CRASH CAR BURN and LONEHILL ESTATE will only be performing in Johannesburg, and VAN COKE KARTEL and SHY GUEVARAS will only be performing in Cape Town!

Wonderboom is a perfect choice. They will be exceptional.

Van Coke and the Guevara’s will be great too.

I’m sorry, you can’t put the dreary monotonous boring punk rock of Crash Car Burn on stage in front of Korn, Muse and Chris Cornell. How sad and pathetic. Lonehill Estate I honestly have no idea but I doubt their northern-suburbs pretty-boy pop-rock could be that much better.

They should be using these events to promote our best talent right under the noses of international artists – the people with the best connections in the industry. Why do they try boost some overrated, sad-ass boring kiddie wannabe rock stars?

Oh, and Prime Circle, yeah, playing 3 year old, over-played, pop rock radio songs – very fucking nice.

To be productive, here’s a few suggestions for a real rock concert:
Taxi Violence, New Academics, Myepic, Deity’s Muse, Dirty Skirts, your suggestions?

Best of 2007 Music

As per this post, I’ve compiled my own list of the most-played music added to my iPod in 2007. Interesting.

  1. The Cliks – Oh Yeah – 55 Plays (I had a phase, OK!)
  2. Fall Out Boy – This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race (Mandatory emo patch)
  3. Harris Tweed – Beautiful Mystery (Now we’re getting somewhere)
  4. Muse – Knights of Cydonia
  5. Billy Talent – Red Flag (I don’t always make the choice of what my iPod plays)
  6. Harris Tweed – Ode to Confusion
  7. My Chemical Romance – Cancer
  8. My Chemical Romance – Teenagers
  9. Grinderman – No Pussy Blues
  10. Harris Tweed – Superfly

Which leaves no doubt as to my artist of the year – Harris Tweed.

The Parlotones – A World Next Door To Yours

Parlotones - A World Next Door To Yours

I finally got my grubby paws on The Parlotones‘ new album – A World Next Door To Yours – after hearing pieces of it at a friend about a month ago and then of course attending the album launch at Tings n Times.

I must admit I was pretty worried when I started listening to it that it would turn out to be a horrible disappointment. When you consider the smashing success that was “Radiocontrolledrobot” you expect that the artists could only go downhill from that high.

Not wanting to make an immediate judgement I put the disk in for a second spin. Bang! I was hooked. It is astonishing how much the songs grow and develop as you listen to them. The album draws you in and takes you on a whirlwind ride through the emotionally charged landscape that is the kingdom of the Parlotones. Pure brilliance starts to shine through as you tiptoe cautiously and then barge frantically through the 14 track album. It’s early days to choose a favourite, but having seen it live and hearing it on the disk “Solar System” is definitely one that shines out.

As of this writing its R110 on Kalahari.net. Its a steal.

Link to buy album.

Guns ‘n Roses Postpones World Tour, Still to Play Coke Fest. Ke?

So I just picked up off Idolator that Guns ‘n Roses are postponing their world tour due to an injury to bassist Tommy Stinson’s hand.

Great, so now we get an even more watered-down version of an already watered-down band.

Frankly I’m surprised Big Concerts didn’t just pull the plug…

Metallica – The Band That Would Not Leave

Metallica - James Hetfield
Saturday’s concert was awesome, despite the problems detailed in my last post. As a matter of fact, I’d have to write an essay just to do each act justice.

All the supporting acts performed really good sets – sticking to the hits and keeping the crowd alive. The only band that seemed to be a bit flat was The Rasmus, but I’ve had plenty of exposure to Finns, and relatively speaking they were positively jovial!!!

Simple Plan
were great openers, Seether rocked with all their classics and some new material too, Collective Soul had a great (gremlin-filled) performance and Metallica just blew everyone away, over and over again. James Hetfield has a stage presence second to none. They owned that stadium. By the end of their two hour long performance they looked just as tired as we did (probably far more) and yet they did not want to leave the stage. Our enthusiasm gave big man James gooseflesh! Lars practically died of exhaustion on stage too!

Was it worth the R500? Hell yeah.

After about 15 minutes of us cheering them and them cheering us, eventually they left the stage with a promise to return soon.

Oh, you want photos? Check here…
